Taxonomic notes:

Kato et al. (2011) include only one genus, Porolithon.

Rösler et al. (2016) reject this as an independent subfamily and note that the name Metagoniolithoideae H.W. Johansen 1969 has priority over Porolithoideae A. Kato & M, Baba 2011. In their opinion the subfamily Metagoniolithoideae comprises two monophyletic clades: Porolithon Foslie emend. A.Kato & M.Baba and Metagoniolithon Weber-van Bosse.
