Unicellular and motile members of the Mesostigmatophyceae. Flagella of about cell length or shorter. Cruciate flagellar root system with 4 microtubular roots; roots no. 1d and 2d each associated with a multilayered structure (MLS). Chloroplast shaped like a shallow cup, with eyespot and pyrenoids, associated with a microbody. Cells covered by different layers of scales: 'naviculoid scales' (similar in shape to the diatom genus Navicula) and 'basket-scales'.
