Valves with a sternum and a raphe. A labiate process is present only in one group, the Eunotiales, who have a reduced raphe system, sexual reproduction isogamous with non-motile female and male cells, fertilization by conjugation/juxtapositioning/pairing of the gametangania next to one another within various types of copulation envelopes and not released from the gametangia, auxospore bands composed of perizonial bands.
