Unbranched uniseriate filaments, consisting of cylindrical to ellipsoidal cells possessing thick and lamellated cell walls. Young cells are in pairs, later they are broadly separated by thick, striated transverse septa. Chloroplast parietal, band-shaped, with one inconspicuous pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by zoospores, aplanospores, and thick-walled akinetes. Sexual reproduction unknown.
