Thallus upright and branched, or encrusting. Erect axes geniculate or non-geniculate, initially dimerous or pseudomonomerous. Structure multiaxial; cells of contiguous vegetative filaments often united by lateral fusions or secondary pit connections. Trichocytes often present in the cortex. Sporangial conceptacles formed by morphogenesis of cortical filaments interspersed within the fertile disc (COL-type). Spermatangial branches restricted to the floor of the male conceptacles. Otherwise with the characters of the order.
