Usually growing in freshwater or soil habitats. Cell length in flagellate stages up to about 7 (10) µm. Flagellum inserted in a shallow groove; flagellar length about 1-2 times the cell length. Immature no. 2. basal body measuring about 120-250 nm; flagellar apparatus containing one or two rhizoplasts; basal body displacement by nearly one basal body diameter. Cells without theca; non-flagellate palmelloid stages covered by mucilage. Last but one base pair in Helix 46 of the nuclear 18S rRNA is G-C instead of C-G; base pair 6 of Helix [H61] in the plastid-encoded 16S rRNA is U-G instead of GA.
