Thallus siphonous, generally macroscopic or sometimes microscopic, ranging from simple, branched siphons to complex thalli. Siphons consisting of a large central vacuole, surrounded by a thin parietal layer of cytoplasm containing many plastids and nuclei, which divide by asynchronously. Cytoplasm exhibiting streaming. Plastids fusiform or ellipsoidal. Thalli homoplastidic or heteroplastidic. Chloroplasts with or without pyrenoid. Accessory photosynthetic pigments siphonoxanthin and siphonein. Principal cell wall polysaccharides mannan, xylan and glucan (cellulose). Thallus surface of several species calcified. Reproductive zoids bi- or quadriflagellate; some members with stephanokont zoids. Sexually reproducing species mainly with a haplontic life cycle, or sometimes isomorphic or heteromorphic diplohaplontic life cycle. Almost entirely marine, except for a single genus, Dichotomosiphon, which also occurs in freshwater habitats.
