Description:
Plants autotrophic or parasitic. Thallus structurally uniaxial. Procarpic; carpogonial branches 3-celled, borne on an intercalary cortical supporting cell that also functions as the auxiliary cell. Gonimoblast initial single, directed toward the thallus surface and bearing several gonimolobes composed almost entirely of carposporangia. Carposporophyte nutritive system developed through the transformation of cortical cells that persist and do not fuse with the developing carposporophyte. Tetrasporophytes isomorphic with gametophytes; tetrasporangia zonately divided, borne singly and by successive axial cells in stichidia, sessile [after Saunders & Kraft (1994: 1260)].
