Description:
Thallus erect or decumbent, simple to richly branched, blade-like and foliose or terete. Structure multiaxial, with a filamentous medulla and a pseudoparenchymatous cortex and with numerous secondary pit connections in the medulla (Halymeniaceae), or lacking secondary pit connections (Tsengiaceae). Pit plugs with a bounding membrane on both surfaces; plug caps absent. Carpogonial branches 2–4-celled, directed outwards. Postfertilisation connecting filaments arising directly from the carpogonium, branched, septate. Auxiliary cells on a separate cortical branch system. Gonimoblast initials single, outwardly directed. Carposporophyte multilobed, most cells forming carposporangia. Tetrasporangia decussately or cruciately divided. Life history triphasic, with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes.
