Description:
Thalli (gametophytes and sporophytes in isomorphic taxa) erect, fleshy, radially or bilaterally branched, occasionally with a regular sequence of determinate and indeterminate lateral branches; branches terete or compressed. Structure uniaxial; axial filaments conspicuous throughout, with periaxial filaments radial, opposite, or in alternate pairs; vesicular cells present or absent; secondary pit connections absent; pit plugs lacking cap layers. Cells with many discoid plastids, lacking pyrenoids. Carpogonial branches borne on inner cortical cells or basal cells of laterals, 3–5-celled, with or without accessory cells; post-fertilisation development not involving auxiliary cells, the zygote developing (directly or after fusion with the hypogynous cell) a fusion cell bearing branched gonimoblast filaments with terminal carposporangia. Cystocarps protuberant, with a thick ostiolate pericarp, or within the cortex and lacking a pericarp. Tetrasporophyte similar to gametophyte or diminutive and filamentous. Tetrasporangia cruciately divided. Life history triphasic, with heteromorphic or isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes [after Womersley (1996)].
