Thallus calcified, upright and branched, or encrusting. Erect axes geniculate or not, if geniculate with calcified segments (intergenicula) interrupted regularly by uncalcified joints (genicula). Growth by terminal or subterminal initials. Structure multiaxial; cells of contiguous vegetative filaments often united by lateral fusions or secondary pit connections. Reproductive structures developing within conceptacles. Sporangial conceptacles uniporate, formed from morphogenesis of cortical filaments adjacent to or arising within the fertile disc. Sporangia in the form of zonately divided (rarely decussate) tetrasporangia, occasionally bisporangia. Spermatangia forming on the walls and floor of male conceptacles, or restricted to the floor (Mastophoraceae). A single centrally placed fusion cell occurs in the base of the cystocarpic conceptacle.
