Taxonomy Detail

Family Dichotomosiphonaceae

Dichotomosiphonaceae G.M.Smith, 1950: 281.

Source: Silva, P.C. (1980). Names of classes and families of living algae: with special reference to their use in the Index Nominum Genericorum (Plantarum). Regnum Vegetabile 103: 1-156.

Original publication: Smith, G.M. (1950). The fresh-water algae of the United States Second Edition. pp. [i]-vii, [1]-719, 559 figs. New York, Toronto & London: McGraw-Hill Book Company.

Authority notes: The description is very brief and in English. There is no mention of Chadefaud (see Silva 1980: 34)

Description:
Thallus uncalcified; forming irregular, prostrate, loose tufts of dichotomously branched, constricted siphons, attached by rhizoids to muddy substrate (Dichotomosiphon), or thallus forming large erect stipitate blades with well-developed rhizoidal holdfast system (Avrainvillea, Cladocephalus). Siphons interwoven, subdichotomously branched, tortuous to moniliform, with constrictions at dichotomies, without lateral appendages. Sexual reproduction involving gametangia that are terminal on siphons exerted from the blade (Avrainvillea and Cladocephalus), or oogamous (Dichotomosiphon).

Taxonomic notes:

According to Curtis et al. (2008: 763), it may be appropriate to consider the Avrainvillea-Cladocephalus-Dichotomosiphon clade a separate family, sister to the Caulerpaceae-Udoteaceae-Halimedaceae group (suborder Halimedineae).
