Thallus microscopic, living in calcareous substrata; thalli lacking upright portions; composed of irregularly branched multinucleate coenocytic filaments with or without irregular swellings at intervals; chloroplasts elongate spindle-shaped, spherical or tetrahedral; reproduction by aplanospores and quadriflagellate zoospores; stephanokont zoospores absent.
The Ostereobiaceae P.C. Silva in S.P. Parker (Synopsis and classification of living organisms 1: 154. 1982) was invalid as it lacked a Latin diagnosis. It was subsequently validated in Brodie et al. 2007.
