Family Sebdeniaceae

Sebdeniaceae Kylin, 1932: 12.

Type of name: Sebdenia (J.Agardh) Berthold 1882

Original publication: Kylin, H. (1932). Die Florideenordung Gigartinales. Acta Universitatis Lundensis 28(8): 1-88, 22 figs, 28 plates.

Description:
Thallus soft to firm, erect with a single holdfast, or mat-forming and dorsiventral with secondary holdfasts from the ventral surface, branched or unbranched, with terete compressed or blade-like axes. Structure multiaxial; medulla of loosely arranged or periclinal hyaline filaments, with or without lateral vesicular cells, grading to an outer medulla of stellate or rounded cells; cortex of a few layers of rounded to elongate cells. Spermatangia in sori on outer cortical cells. Carpogonia and auxiliary cells in separate branch systems (non-procarpic) and not forming in specialised ampullae. Carpogonial branches 3- or 4-celled, lateral on cortical cells; auxiliary cells distinct, intercalary, after diploidisation issuing outwardly directed gonimoblasts directly; nutritive filaments present or absent. Cystocarps embedded, with an involucre and a slightly to markedly raised ostiolate pericarp, sometimes with several carposporophytes in a conjoined nemathecial pericarp, with almost all gonimoblast cells becoming carposporangia. Tetrasporangia cruciately or irregularly divided, scattered in the outer cortex or in raised nemathecia, arising laterally on a bearing cell. Life history triphasic, with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes.
