Thallus prostrate or erect, variously branched. Structure uniaxial or multiaxial, with a medulla of longitudinal filaments and a cortex of anticlinal filaments (in crustose genera with a mesothallus as well as dorsal and ventral perithalli) with prominent vesicular cells. Reproductive structures in nemathecia. Spermatangia arising laterally on, or as complete conversions of, nemathecial filaments. Carpogonial branches separate from auxiliary cell branches. Post-fertilisation zygote fusing with an intermediate cell of the carpogonial branch, which then produces connecting filaments that fuse with auxiliary cells. Cystocarps forming within swollen nemathecial areas, with multiple carposporophytes being confluent and not bulging beyond margins. Tetrasporangia scattered or in nemathecia, irregularly zonate to irregularly cruciately divided.
