Taxonomy Detail

Family Udoteaceae

Udoteaceae J.Agardh, 1887: 12.

Source: Silva, P.C. (1980). Names of classes and families of living algae: with special reference to their use in the Index Nominum Genericorum (Plantarum). Regnum Vegetabile 103: 1-156.

Original publication: Agardh, J.G. (1887). Till algernes systematik. Nya bidrag. (Femte afdelningen.). Acta Universitatis Lundensis 23(2): 1-174, 5 plates.

Authority notes: Conservation of this name as proposed by Silva (1980: 41) is no longer necessary under the ICN.

Taxonomic notes:

Curtis et al. (2008) question the placement of Avrainvillea and Cladcephalus in the family Udoteaceae. They note that there is strong support to suggest that most members of the Udotaceae are more closely related to the Caulerpaceae than to the Avrainvillea-Cladocephalus- Dichotomosiphon clade and that furthermore, this clade is aligned basally within the suborder Halimedineae, so it may be more appropriate to consider it a separate family, sister to the Caulerpaceae-Udoteaceae-Halimedaceae group.
