Description:
Thallus erect, richly branched, with terete or compressed branches. Structure uniaxial and polysiphonous, with a protruding apical cell and with 4 pericentral cells arising in an alternating sequence, the first-formed transverse pericentral cells lying in a linear row. Lateral pericentral cells each cutting off 2 flanking cells (these sometimes only in fertile branches) that in some genera divide further to produce rows of cells. Branching endogenous; trichoblasts absent. Some genera with simple monosiphonous filaments from the pericentral or flanking cells, or (in Cottoniella) from axial cells. Procarps on adaxial transverse pericentral cells, with a 4-celled carpogonial branch and 2 sterile cells. Carposporophyte with a basal fusion cell and terminal carposporangia. Cystocarps with an ostiolate pericarp. Spermatangia in surface sori on lateral branches. Tetrasporangia in stichidia, cut off from lateral percentral cells, in 2 longitudinal rows, with post-sporangial cover cells on both sides [after Womersley (2003)].
