Thallus erect or decumbent, cartilaginous or soft and mucilaginous, radially or complanately branched; branches terete or compressed. Medulla hollow or pseudoparenchymatous, with large hyaline cells, grading into a cortex of smaller pigmented cells, or to an inner cortex of smaller pigmented cells in a reticulum and an outer cortex of anticlinal branched filaments. Spermatangia borne on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 2- or 3-celled. Carposporophyte with basal nutritive tissue connected to the pericarp by generally persistent erect filaments. Gonimoblast globular, with discrete gonimolobes composed entirely of carposporangia. Fusion cell narrow; outlines of constituent cells mostly discernible. Tetrasporangia scattered or in nemathecia, terminal, cruciately divided.
