Description:
Thallus erect or prostrate, or with erect axes arising from a prostrate system; epilithic or epiphytic, rarely parasitic, occasionally host-specific; morphologically variable, ranging from small and filamentous to moderately sized thalli with fleshy axes. Structure uniaxial and polysiphonous, with 4 or more pericentral cells arising in an alternating sequence around each central axial cell, with or without cortication; trichoblasts common, pigmented or not, restricted to the apices or present on all parts of the thallus. Growth apical; lateral branches arising spirally, alternately or distichously, equally developing or occasionally with growth of some branch primordia suppressed and resulting in a flattened bilateral frond; pigmented monosiphonous laterals, when present, not forming Y-junctions of contiguous end walls at dichotomies. Carpogonial branches and spermatangia mostly associated with trichoblasts. Spermatangia frequently in elongate clusters or in disc-like arrangements, usually at branch apices. Gonimoblast with carposporangia formed sympodially in short chains. Cystocarps projecting, with a distinct pericarp, mostly ostiolate. Tetrasporangia tetrahedrally divided, borne in stichidia or within normal branches, 1–several per segment, occasionally in long-linear or spiral series.
