Thallus erect or decumbent, free-living or associated with a sponge, radially, distichously or irregularly branched; branches terete or compressed, with hollow axes irregularly partitioned by multilayered diaphragms, with internal filaments lining the central cavity (but not regularly longitudinally aligned), these with lateral vesicular cells, or with a medulla of aggregated filaments. Reproductive organs on the thallus surface or in specialised leaflets. Spermatangia in sori. Carpogonial branches 3-celled. Carposporophyte with a basal fusion cell; most cells of the gonimoblast forming carposporangia. Pericarp with inner stellate cells. Cystocarps protuberant or immersed. Tetrasporangia terminal, in cortical pits and tetrahedrally divided, or in nemathecia and cruciately, decussately or irregularly divided.
