Thallus erect or tangled or turf-like, sparingly to richly branched, with terete or compressed axes. Structure uniaxial, with an obvious apical cell and a central axial filament. Each axial cell with 1 or 2 periaxial cells; medulla of periaxial filaments (with or without rhizoids) or with branched filaments of gradually smaller cells forming a pseudoparenchymatous cortex. Non-procarpic. Spermatangia in clusters or rosettes on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 2–5-celled, straight, borne on inner cortical or medial to outer medullary cells. Connecting filaments relatively short, unbranched, non-septate. Auxiliary cell a nearby cortical or medullary cell; after diploidisation cutting off an inward gonimoblast initial, eventually forming a fusion cell with radial gonimoblast filaments. Cystocarps internal, without an involucre, splitting around the central axis; carposporangia terminal on short filaments. Tetrasporangia scattered or formed in the slightly thickened cortex, zonately divided. Life history triphasic with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes [after Womersley (1994: 448)].
