Nomenclatural notes:

Ordo Squamarieae tribus Cruorieae J. Agardh (1851: 487, 488). As circumscribed in the ING, this family includes Petrocelis, the type of Petrocelidaceae Denizot 1968. Cultural studies by J. West et al. (1977) have shown that the type species of Petrocelis (P. cruenta J. Agardh) is the tetrasporophyte in a life history of which the gametophyte has previously been described as a species of Gigartina subg. Mastocarpus. If it is deemed desirable to segregate those species of Gigartina with a heteromorphic life history of this type from the Gigartinaceae, Petrocelidaceae is an available family name, despite the fact that the description was based on only one morphological phase. Not "(J.Agardh) Kylin"; Art. 49.2 Melbourne Code. Parenthetical authors are not cited for suprageneric names.

Taxonomic notes:

Included in the Cryptonemiales F.Schmitz (1892: 21) by Athanasiadis (2016: 586).
