Description:
Thallus (gametophyte) erect or secondarily attached to the substratum, blade-like or markedly compressed, slippery to soft-textured, in one genus (Titanophora) lightly calcified. Structure with a filamentous medulla and cortex; cortical filaments dichotomously branched and lacking secondary pit connections, with or without vesicular cells. Monoecious or dioecious. Spermatangia in sori on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 2- or 3-celled, borne on inner cortical cells; after fertilisation the carpogonium fusing with a nutritive auxiliary cell borne on the supporting cell, then producing few to many connecting filaments that fuse with generative auxiliary cells, each producing gonimoblasts that are entirely converted to carposporangia; cortical cells modified around the maturing cystocarp; carposporangia liberated through a distinct ostiole. Tetrasporophyte crustose; tetrasporangia zonately divided or unknown. Life history triphasic, with heteromorphic gametophyte and tetrasporophyte.
