Authority notes: Bangiaceae is often accredited to Nägeli (1847: 136, 252), but that author clearly applied this name to an order, comprising two families ('Lyngbyeae' and Ulveae'). Engler's circumscription, like that of all subsequent authors, included Porphyra C. Agardh 1824 (nom. cons.), the type of Porphyraceae Kützing 1843, so that Bangiaceae was initially superfluous. Because Bangiaceae, rather than Porphyraceae, has been used almost exclusively since 1892, conservation seems justifiable.
