Description:
Thallus of various forms but generally blade- or leaf-like, membranous and delicate, many with midribs, lateral veins (nerves), or both, or with a network of macroscopic or microscopic veins; some species lacking veins. Growth from a prominent transversely dividing apical cell or many obliquely dividing marginal cells; some genera with intercalary cell divisions. Structure uniaxial, with or without an obvious primary axis or midrib, with 4 pericentral cells per primary axial cell, the lateral pericentral cells generally forming before the transverse; lateral pericentral cells dividing further, the derivatives coalescing to form the blades. Spermatangia usually forming in sori. Fertile pericentral cells (supporting cells) of procarps with 1, rarely 2, carpogonial branches, and either 1 or 2 sterile cell groups. Carposporophytes usually large, conspicuous, generally surrounded by distinct ostiolate pericarps; ostioles occasionally poorly developed; carposporangia terminal or in chains. Tetrasporangia tetrahedrally divided, commonly forming in sori on blade surfaces, marginal lobes, or within main axial filaments or specialised branchlets.
