Original publication: Kützing, F.T. (1843). Phycologia generalis oder Anatomie, Physiologie und Systemkunde der Tange. Mit 80 farbig gedruckten Tafeln, gezeichnet und gravirt vom Verfasser. pp. [part 1]: [i]-xxxii, [1]-142, [part 2:] 143-458, 1, err.], pls 1-80. Leipzig: F.A. Brockhaus.

Thallus small to moderately large, richly branched, mostly erect, although often tangled and forming secondary anastomoses. Axes terete, slightly compressed or flat, cartilaginous, usually thickly branched with only short spinous branchlets or a mixture of short and long branchlets, or furcately or laterally and usually complanately branched. Structure uniaxial, with a prominent apical cell and an axial filament that is obvious in sections at all parts of the thallus, or becoming inconspicuous. Medulla pseudoparenchymatous, of large hyaline cells surrounding the central axial filament (if obvious); in some species with rhizoidal filaments in the immediate vicinity of the axial filament. Cortex of small pigmented cells; in some taxa showing rosettes in surface view. Spermatangia borne in chains in slightly swollen nemathecia at the base of branchlets, or scattered in the outer cortex. Carpogonial branches 3 (–4)-celled, laterally and outwardly directed, on an inner or mid-cortical supporting cell. Auxiliary cell immediately distal to the supporting cell. Carposporophytes with a fusion cell or several central cells, with radiating gonimoblast filaments terminating in chains of carposporangia, or forming a reticulum of elongate cells with discrete clusters of small cells bearing single carposporangia. Cystocarps immersed or protruding, usually without an ostiole. Tetrasporangia zonately divided, in raised nemathecia partially or entirely girdling the base of short branchlets, or scattered in the outer cortex. Life history triphasic with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes [after Womersley (1994a: 409; 1994b: 436)]
