Nomenclatural notes:

Following tradition, Kylin (1956) applied the name Chantransiaceae Kützing 1843 to the family comprising Acrochaetium, Audouinella, Colaconema, Conchocelis, Grania, Kylinia, Liagorophila, and Rhodochorton. Fritsch (1944: 258 footnote; 1945: 737), realizing that Chantransia had been used for developmental stages of Batrachospermum (Batrachospermaceae) and Lemanea (Lemaneaceae) but had nothing to do with the marine species of the Acrochaetium complex, attempted to rectify the situation by proposing the name Acrochaetiaceae to replace Chantransiaceae. The correct typification of Chantransia, in fact, results in the assignment of that genus to the Lemaneaceae (cf. Silva, 1952: 261). Unfortunately, Fritsch failed to give a description or a reference to a published description of the Acrochaetiaceae. The first author to validate that name seems to have been Taylor. Meanwhile, Rhodochortaceae was proposed by Nasr (1947). Because Acrochaetiaceae has achieved general usage while Rhodochortaceae has been ignored, its conservation seems justified. Audouinellaceae J. Feldmann 1962, a segregate from the Acrochaetiaceae, was initially superfluous since the family to which it was applied included Rhodochorton. Maintaining Audouinellaceae separate from Acrochaetiaceae would thus necessitate conservation.
