Description:
Thallus usually large and coarse, erect or decumbent; branching strictly dichotomous to irregular. Axes terete or compressed, mostly cartilaginous, some soft. Structure with a multiaxial medulla that is loosely filamentous or composed of longitudinally aligned filaments surrounded by a pseudoparenchymatous cortex. Cells of inner cortex with secondary pit connections. Thallus monoecious or dioecious. Spermatangia scattered or in sori, borne on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 3-celled, on the same (procarpic) or separate (non-procarpic) cortical branch systems as auxiliary cells; connecting filaments arising from the fertilised carpogonium, diploidising an inner cortical auxiliary cell. Cells adjacent to auxiliary cells forming an enveloping tissue of slender filaments. Cystocarps large, with either a conspicuous central fusion cell or a placenta formed from fusions of elements of reproductive and vegetative tissues, producing elaborate structures; the gonimoblast forming a peripheral layer or layers of carposporangia. Cystocarps largely immersed or causing a swelling of the bearing branch, ostiolate. Tetrasporangia in the outer cortex, scattered or in sori, zonately divided. Life history triphasic with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes.
