Description:
Thallus dorsiventral, flabellate (often with some overlapping lobes), crust-like, mostly prostrate and firmly attached, or with free margins, occasionally calcified; ventral surface with or without attachment rhizoids. Structure often with a distinct basal layer (the hypothallus) or middle layer (the mesothallus) from which ascending, and sometimes descending, filaments (the perithallus) arise. Calcified cell wall thickenings present in the perithallus of some species; these can be uniformly distributed or clustered around particular cells (cystoliths). Life history triphasic with isomorphic gametophyte and tetrasporophyte generations. Reproductive structures arranged in nemathecia, usually separated by paraphyses. Spermatangial nemathecia usually without paraphyses. Carpogonial branches 2–4-celled. Auxiliary cells intercalary in modified 3–6-celled filaments that are produced as laterals from the basal cells of paraphyses. Carposporangia in a linear series or branched clusters among paraphyses; gonimolobes developing from diploidised auxiliary cells or directly from connecting filaments. Tetrasporangial nemathecia with or without paraphyses. Tetrasporangia borne either directly from the upper perithallial cells or laterally from the basal cells of paraphyses, with or without pedicels, cruciately to irregularly cruciately divided.
