Thallus with prostrate and erect axes or erect axes only; the latter terete to flattened, irregularly, alternately or pinnately branched; prostrate axes stoloniferous, irregularly branched, terete to compressed, attached by complex brush-like haptera consisting of both internal rhizines, growing independent and protruding between surface cells, and pigmented multicellular filaments originating from surface cells; haptera adhering to or penetrating the substratum. Structure as for the order, generally with many internal rhizines originating from the inner cortical cells and growing basipetally, obliquely or transversally through the thallus. Life history biphasic or triphasic. Gametophytes dioecious or occasionally monoecious. Cystocarps raised, bilocular, with carposporangia developing on both locules; spermatangia in colorless sori. Tetrasporangia in apical sori with or without sterile margins, cruciately or tetrahedrally divided; young sori usually with tetrasporangia arranged in ordered parallel rows; mature tetrasporangia either irregularly arranged or in parallel rows.
