Description:
Thallus of widely varying morphology, from small filamentous tufts to delicate membranous or large foliose thalli, occasionally cartilaginous. Structure uniaxial; pit plugs lacking cap layers. Carpogonial branches usually 4-celled, borne on a supporting cell (fertile pericentral cell) that in some taxa also bears groups of sterile cells. Auxiliary cells forming from a supporting cell, usually after fertilisation, or the supporting cells acting directly as auxiliary cells; diploidisation of auxiliary cells by means of a connecting cell arising from the fertilised carpogonium or by direct fusion of the carpogonium and fusion cell. Gonimoblast arising from an auxiliary cell, with or without a basal fusion cell, with branched gonimoblast filaments in which all cells, terminal cells or chains of cells, form carposporangia. Mature carposporophyte naked or covered by a filamentous involucre or pseudoparenchymatous pericarp. Spermatangia borne in spherical or elongate heads, or solitary or clustered from cells of whorl branches, occasionally in flat cushions or sorus-like structures. Life history triphasic, with isomorphic gametophytes and sporophytes; occasionally direct and asexual, then reproducing by unicellular or multicellular propagules. Tetrasporangia tetrahedrally or cruciately (then often decussately) divided, borne on whorl branches or lateral branches, occasionally in stichidia. Polysporangia rarely present.
