Description: Unicellular thalli spherical, ovoid, or cylindrical. Two isokont, anterior flagella. Protoplast separated from cell wall by a gelatinous layer. Posterior portion of protoplast reported to exhibit metaboly in some species. Single chloroplast cup-shaped, parietal, or H-shaped depending on the species. Pyrenoids present or absent depending on the species. Stigma present. Two or four anterior contractile vacuoles inserted between flagellar bases or many and scattered throughout the periphery of the protoplast. Papillum rarely present. A Polytoma-like species, V. hyalina, lacks photosynthetic pigments and pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis normally producing four motile daughter cells. Aplanospore stages known for some species. Palmella and akinete stages have been reported. Isogamous sexual reproduction known only from V. nekrassowii (V. incisa). Cell wall in Vitreochlamys incisa of the type IV lattice (similar to Lobomonas piriformis), distinguished from the type III lattice in C. asymmetrica, the type II lattice in Brachiomonas, Chlorogonium, Chloromonas, Carteria and some species of Chlamydomonas, and the type I lattice in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox aureus. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
