Description: Colonial; colonies many-celled, micro- or macroscopic (to several cm in diam.), mucilaginous, irregularly spherical or irregular, with cells irregularly, scarcely or densely arranged through the whole colony, greenish, bluish, brownish or reddish colored; colonial slime diffluent or (rather) limited, usually without structure, colorless or near the surface yellowish, yellow-brownish or reddish colored (particularly in aerophytic species); cells without own mucilaginous envelopes (subg. Anacystis) or facultatively (especially in the marginal parts of colonies) with their own, fine, sometimes concentrically lamellated mucilaginous envelopes (subg. Aphanothece). Cells widely oval, oval, ellipsoidal or rod-like, straight or slightly curved, with rounded ends, in one species with facultative aerotopes, pale grayish blue-green, pale to bright blue-green or reddish, sometimes with visible peripheral chromatoplasm. Division of cells only in a transverse direction, perpendicular to the lengthwise axis in successive generations; however, sometimes daughter cells move from the long axis during division, particularly in small-celled species with oval cells. Reproduction by dissociation of colonies (sometimes to solitary cells or small groups of cells). Nanocyte production in several species. Widely distributed genus with species limited usually by specific ecological conditions. Some epipelic in stagnant water; some in soils, subaerophytic on wet rocks and walls, planktonic with facultatively developed aerotopes, and even from saline environments or thermal springs.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
