Description: Plants form plate-like or somewhat hemispherical colonies, sometimes very irregular in outline. Cells irregularly divided in centre of colony, more regularly arranged towards margin. Thallus multilayered, lower cells more elongated than those above, with some swollen upper cells prolonged into a hair. Reproduction unknown. Chaetobolus epiphytic or epilithic, with marine species from Greenland; freshwater species from running water in Arctic Norway. Little-known genus with information lacking on chloroplast structure and reproduction. Type marine and possibly conspecific with Ochlochaete hystrix.
