Chimonodinium Craveiro, Calado, Daugbjerg, Gert Hansen & Moestrup, 2011

Holotype species: Chimonodinium lomnickii (Wołoszyńska) Craveiro, Calado, Daugbjerg, Gert Hansen & Moestrup

Original publication and holotype designation: Craveiro, S.C., Calado, A.J., Daugbjerg, N., Hansen, G. & Moestrup, O. (2011). Ultrastructure and LSU rDNA-based phylogeny of Peridinium lomnickii and description of Chimonodinium gen. nov. (Dinophyceae). Protist 162: 590-615.

Description: Plate formula po, cp, x, 4?, 3a, 7'', 6c, 5s, 5''', 2''''. Plate pattern asymmetric, plate 1a is 4 or 5-sided, 2a is five-sided, 3a is 6-sided, The three anterior intercalaries form a single group (cf. two groups in Bysmatrum, a genus of marine benthic species). The amphiesma opens along the cingulum to release the cells after division. Amphiesmal plates with ornamentation of papillae and small spines. The cells contain a microtubular basket and are therefore possibly mixotrophic. Chloroplasts lack pyrenoids. Cyst uncalcified, smooth.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
