Description: A monospecific family of small (to 1.5 cm in length), flattened, cartilaginous, and laterally to dichotomously branched plants. Construction is apparently multiaxial, the medulla composed of a network of elongate cells surrounded by a deep cortex of anticlinal filaments. Males are unknown. Procarps and gonimoblast development are similar to those of the Gigartinaceae, the supporting cell functioning as the auxiliary cell and numerous gonimoblast initials growing towards the thallus interior to form isolated clusters of carposporangia separated by sterile tissue, the whole carposporophyte surrounded by a filamentous hull.

The family differs from the Gigartinaceae primarily by its tetrasporangia which, although similarly cruciate, form terminally in the outer cortex over the whole of the axes, in contrast to forming catenate series in deeply sunken sori.

Chondriella has not been studied critically since its original description.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
