Coleodesmiopsis Dutt, Datta & Gupta, 1982

Holotype species: Coleodesmiopsis fremyi Dutt, Datta & Gupta

Currently accepted name for the type species: Coleodesmium wrangelii Borzì ex Geitler

Original publication and holotype designation: Dutt, A.K., Datta, T.K. & Gupta, K.K (1982). Studies on high altitude saxicolous Cyanophyta X. On the morphology of Coleodesmium wrangelii (Ag.) Borzi and Coleodesmiumopsis gen. nov. Cryptogamie, Algologie 3: 177-186.

Description: Komárek (1989): Thallous; thallus small or expanded, composed from free, faciculate, heteropolar, few mm long, falsely branched filaments, attached by their bases to the stony substrate. Filaments with 2-3 joined trichomes, which have later developed own individual, firm, cylindrical sheaths; they are enveloped together by the filament sheath; inner filaments (in diagnosis called pseudobranchings) adpressed with each other and only in the upper parts divaricate. Sheaths firm, faintly parallely striated, translucent, pale yellowish, at the ends closed (opened only during and after hormogonia formation). Trichomes more or 1ess cylindrical, uniseriate, constricted at cross walls, sometimes slightly attenuated or widened to the ends. Cells shortly barrel-shaped, olive-green or pale blue-green, with more or less granular content, apical cells rounded or conical-rounded. From basal cells of trichomes and branches develop sometimes unipored heterocytes. Irregular formation of intercalar spherical akinetes with thick cell walls (solitary or in short rows).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
