Coleodesmium A.Borzì ex L.Geitler, 1942

Holotype species: Coleodesmium wrangelii Borzì ex Geitler

Original publication and holotype designation: Geitler, L. (1942). Schizophyta: Klasse Schizophyceae. In: Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien, Sweite Auflage. (Engler, A. & Prantl, K. Eds) Vol.1b, pp. 1-232. Leipzig: Wilhelm Engelmann.

Description: Filamentous; filaments united into intensely branched, mucilaginous, polarized, up to 1 cm high, blue-green or brownish or reddish fascicles; sheaths branched, firm, thin or thick, often lamellated, opened at the apex, colorless or yellow-brown, containing 1 to several trichomes. Trichomes polarized with basal, usually elliptical heterocytes, parallel oriented, falsely branched, cylindrical, uniseriate, constricted at the crosswalls, to the ends not narrowed or only slightly narrowed; false branching initiated at the intercalary heterocytes. Cells shortly barrel-shaped, end cells widely rounded. Aerotopes absent. Akinetes develop rarely near the trichome bases, solitary in short rows. Cell division transverse to the long axis of a trichome. Reproduction by hormogonia, liberated from sheaths; probably formed with the help of necridic cells. Epiphytically on aquatic plants or epilithic on stones in clear, unpolluted creeks, usually in mountain areas. Three species are described from Africa. All taxa need further studies.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
