Description: Juvenile thalli disk-shaped, consisting of a packet of cells undergoing true vegetative cell division. Mature thalli indefinitely expanded, solid, firm and gelatinous. Cells near upper surface of frond pyriform or elliptical, more or less vertical, densely aggregated; in middle of frond pyriform, sometimes with rhizoid-like appendage; at lower surface pyriform to almost spherical. Cells uninucleate, each with a cup-shaped chloroplast, in most instances opening at lower part of cell, and with single pyrenoid. Cell wall with positive reaction to iodine-zinc chloride reagent. During reproductive, cells near upper surface differentiate into sporangia in which two or four zoospores formed. Asexual reproduction by anteriorly quadriflagellate zoospores. Zoospores markedly flattened, ovate when viewed from one side, lanceolate from opposite side, sometimes with papillate appendage at posterior end. Chloroplast of zoospores cup-shaped, with pyrenoid and stigma. In culture, zoospores produce plants similar to those collected in vivo. Method of sexual reproduction unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
