Holotype species: Conochaete polytricha (Nordstedt) Klebahn
Original publication and holotype designation: Klebahn, H. (1893). Zur Kritik einiger Algengattungen. Jahrbücher für wissenschaftliche Botanik 25: 278-321.
Description: Clusters of cells embedded in a gelatinous cushion, each cell bearing a few sheathed hairs. One or two parietal plastids each with a pyrenoid, per cell. Asexual reproduction by zoospores produced 4-8 per cell; sexual reproduction unknown. Conochaete known only from New Zealand attached to other algae, aquatic plants and stones in fresh water. Critical studies on reproduction and ultrastructure not carried out; assignment to Charophyceae provisional.
