Dipterocladia Y.S.D.M.de Jong, 1997

Holotype species: Dipterocladia pinnatifolia (Suhr) Y.S.D.M.de Jong

Original publication and holotype designation: De Jong, Y.S.D.M., Prud'homme van Reine, W.F. & Lokhorst, G.M. (1997). Studies on Dasyaceae II. A revision of the genera Eupogodon and Dipterocladia gen. nov. (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta). Botanica Marina 40: 421-450.

Description: Thallus erect, sympodially developed and bilaterally branched. Indeterminate axes compressed and corticated, pinnately or irregularly producing a paired determinate lateral branch and pseudolateral from the one side of the axis, the subsequent pair on the alternate side. Determinate lateral branches polysiphonous, short, unbranched, and pyramidal. Pseudolaterals pigmented, monosiphonous throughout, 1-5 times branched, compact and tapering distally. Axial cells of indeterminate axes surrounded by 4 (-5) periaxials which are quickly enclosed by subcortical cells and exterior descending rhizoidal filaments, collectively forming a thick cortex.
Sexual plants unknown. Tetrahedral sporangia produced in successive whorls of up to 6, forming in single or paired, linear-lanceolate stichidia borne on short polysiphonous bases, these branches replacing polysiphonous determinate lateral branches. Tetrasporangia partially enclosed by corticating cover cells at maturity.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
