Original publication and holotype designation: Smith, G.M. & Klyver, F.D. (1929). Draparnaldiopsis, a new member of the algal family Chaetophoraceae. Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 48: 196-203, 1 pl.

Description: Plants erect, consisting of branched, uniseriate filaments attached by rhizoids. Main axes of cylindrical cells of different length, short cells alternating with longer cells. Short lateral fasicles of secondary branches arise opposite one another or in whorls from short cells on primary axes. Cells of secondary branches cylindrical, inflated or fusiform, with terminal cells narrowly obtuse or bearing long multicellular hairs. Chloroplast band-like or reticulate in main axes, covering entire wall in secondary branches. Cell uninucleate. Reproduction by zoospores often produced in cells of main axes and gametes in those of secondary branches. Zoospores of different sizes larger zoospores quadriflagellate (2 flagella of different length) and smaller biflagellate. Gametes isogameous and biflagellate. Draparnaldiopsis widely distributed in aquatic habitats but comparatively rare (USA, Bangladesh). Recognition of species based on arrangement of short and long cells in main filaments, nature of branching and form of terminal cells.
