Description: Small loricate monads, epiphytic especially on filamentous algae. The lorica is cylindrical-fusiform, often with a basal stalk, in some species single, in other species attached on the outer side of another lorica, so that colonies are formed. Lorica consists of scales of fibrillar construction; the arrangement of scales varies, also their degree of flaring. These features, the lorica shape, and solitary or colonial habit, constitute species characters. The cell has 2 unequal flagella, one parietal chloroplast with a stigma. The organism is mixotrophic, and the flagella and their roots play an active role in capturing food. Stomatocysts are globular and slightly oblong, with a smooth wall; they are most often placed in the lorica mouth. Cell division and sexual reproduction unknown. Found mainly in freshwater ponds in temperate, subarctic and arctic regions of Europe and North America.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
