Description: Plants filamentous and heterotrichous, consisting of colourless, rhizoidal filaments penetrating soil surface. Prostrate system of crowded, irregularly rounded, clusters of small cells with dense contents, and erect system of irregularly branched filaments of short cells below, more elongated cells above, and terminating in conical cells. Both cell types uninucleate, with parietal chloroplast and several pyrenoids. Reproduction confined to cells of prostate system. Zoospores of 3 types quadriflagellate macro- and microzoospores, and biflagellate microzoospores. Sexual reproduction isogamous and gametes biflagellate. Fritschiella terrestrial, more or less gregarious on moist soil or silt including drying rain-water puddles; also reported from hair of sloths. Widely distributed in tropical and subtropical parts of North Africa and Asia. Ultrastructural investigations reveal plasmodesmata, a phycoplast, and membranes closely appressed to pyrenoids. Detailed information exists on the fine structure (e.g. cytoskeleton) of naked zoospores.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
