Description: Uniaxial, soft, branched one to four orders. Rhizoids cloaking relatively large axial cell, with four medially situated periaxial cells producing di- or trichotomously ramifying, determinate, corticating branches of rectangular to cuneate to ovate cells. Hairs present. Pit plugs lacking cap layers. Monoecious. Carpogonium borne on an adventitious branch. Terminal four cells of branch represent supporting cell and three-celled carpogonial branch. Auxiliary cell an enlarged cell of a branch borne on supporting cell. Fertilized carpogonium producing a connecting filament that contacts the auxiliary cell. A single gonimoblast initial producing a compact cystocarp, almost all cells becoming carposporangia, with no involucre. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte heteromorphic, crustose, Cruoriopsis-like. Tetrasporangia small, cruciate, attached basally. Some populations with direct life history: gametophytes arising directly from crust produced from carpospore. Spore germination: usually a single rhizoid-like outgrowth, soon branching.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
