Description: Plants epiphytic, attached with a small discoid holdfast, ligulate, polystichous, composed of 2 fairly distinct tissues, medullary layer and cortical layer. Medullary layer consisting of large colorless, closely united cells. Cortical layer consisting of small, cubic, pigmented cells. Phaeophycean hairs present occasionally forming tufts. Unilocular sporangia projected from the surface, surrounding hair tufts. Plurilocular sporangia not detected on erect thalli. Very close to Punctaria, distinguished by the presence of projected unilocular sporangia and distinction between medulla and cortex.

Comments: Known only from Pacific coast of North America. In culture unispores develop into microthalli forming plurilocular sporangia (Wynne 1972). Whole life history not clear yet.
