Type designated in: Geitler, L. (1942). Schizophyta: Klasse Schizophyceae. In: Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien, Sweite Auflage. (Engler, A. & Prantl, K. Eds) Vol.1b, pp. 1-232. Leipzig: Wilhelm Engelmann.

Description: Filamentous-thallose; filaments composed of one to more parallel arranged trichomes enveloped by limited, thin or thick, firm or gelatinous sheaths, single or many together, joined more or less in a mucilaginous mat or forming fasciculate or clustering colonies. Trichomes simple, not branched, not attenuated to the ends, of the same width along the whole length, uniseriate, moniliform, clearly constricted at crosswalls, probably isopolar and metameric. Sheaths colorless, structureless. Cells subspherical or barrel-shaped, not elongated to the ends. Heterocytes intercalary, probably only single, several in a trichome. Akinetes not known. Reproduction not described. Cells divide evidently crosswise along the whole trichome, reproduction probably by hormogonia. Both species are marine, growing on the muddy bottom of sea beaches or among marine algae. One species was described from Pacific islands, the second one (type species) was recorded from Caribbean district, Canary Islands and Mauritius.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
