Hummbrella S.A.Earle, 1969

Holotype species: Hummbrella hydra S.A.Earle

Original publication and holotype designation: Earle, S.A. (1969). Hummbrella a new red alga of uncertain taxonomic position from the Juan Fernandez Islands. Occasional Papers of the Farlow Herbarium Harvard University 1: 1-5.

Description: Stalk cylindrical, cartilaginous, usually simple, crowned with an array of simple, soft, lubricous branches. Holdfast small, discoid. Stalk and branches uniaxial, each axial cell cutting off four pericentral cells, each producing the subdi-, trichotomously branched corticating fascicles. Epidermis monostromatic. Rhizoids cloaking axial filament. Secondary pit connections and cell fusions lacking. Hairs present. Monoecious. Carpogonial branch 3-celled, borne on a cell of a cortical fascicle just below the epidermal layer. Fertilized carpogonium cutting off a connecting cell, which presumably fuses with the supporting cell, possibly via a conjunctor cell. Supporting cell serving as auxiliary cell. A single, outwardly directed gonimoblast initial producing the carposporophyte, most cells of which develop into carposporangia. Involucre and carpostome apparently present. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte unknown. Culture studies suggest a direct-type of life history. Spore germination: diprotcellular type.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
