Incendia K.R.Dixon, 2013

Holotype species: Incendia crenata K.R.Dixon

Original publication and holotype designation: Dixon, K.R. & Saunders, G.W. (2013). DNA barcoding and phylogenetics of Ramicrusta and Incendia gen. nov., two early diverging lineages of the Peyssonneliaceae (Rhodophyta). Phycologia 52(1): 82-108.

Description: Thallus brittle, with hypobasal and internal calcification. Hypothallus monostromatic, composed of parallel filaments, giving rise to a consolidated dorsal perithallus of assurgent filaments. Ventral perithallus absent. Proximal perithallial cells forming secondary pit-connections with cells of adjacent filaments, often via radial or transverse cellular projections. Attachment by multicellular rhizoids. Tetrasporangial nemathecia raised, with simple paraphyses. Tetrasporangia cruciately divided, cut off the often-enlarged distal corners of the basal cells of paraphyses, with or without a single-celled pedicel. Carpogonial branches threecelled, borne laterally on basal cells of paraphyses. Auxiliary-cell branches three- to five-celled, borne laterally on basal cells of paraphyses, the suprabasal cell the auxiliary cell. Gonimoblasts arise directly from the septate connecting filament.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Dixon, K.R. (2018). Peyssonneliales. In: Algae of Australia. Marine benthic algae of north-western Australia. 2. Red algae. (Huisman, J.M. Eds), pp. 208-244. Canberra & Melbourne: ABRS & CSIRO Publishing.

Comments: From the Latin incendia, meaning fire, for the brilliant orange markings on the dorsal thallus surface of all known species.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
