Description: Green, phototrophic flagellates with ovoid, rigid, unflattened cells, often with a tapering, posterior spine and pronounced pellicular striations; varying in size from 15-50 _ 7.5-25 _m. Canal opening apical; flagella, eyespot and flagellar swelling as in Euglena. Chloroplasts small, discoid, no pyrenoids; many species have 2 large paramylon rings lying peripherally, opposite each other in the anterior half of the cell. The genus differs from Euglena in being completely rigid and from Phacus in being unflattened. Planktonic organisms, predominantly freshwater in lakes, ponds and streams but some species recorded from brackish habitats; cosmopolitan. Emended diagnosis (Marin & Melkonian 2003: 103).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
